RE: phone company exclusives

Wouldn't it be great if phones came out and you could use them on every company to begin with?

RE: SDKs

While the SDKs for developers help apps get written, what most users really need is an "app" (part of the phone OS really) that provides a higher-level "macro" or "scripting" language with commands like 'FindContact(by_location)' and 'DialContact(contact_found)' so people can built their own scripts like "Find_And_Dial_Nearest_Pizza_Parlor"

Great review! I must commend you for writing a review that compared Palm to Palm, not Palm to iPhone. I'm so sick of those reviews because they are basically irrelevant to me as I don't have an iPhone and am not switching to another network anytime soon. I am upgrading from a Centro and want to know what I will gain and lose in the process. That said, I do miss my Centro mostly because of the apps that I purchased and can not use on my Pre. Also, as mentioned some customization is missing, like creating a shortcut for commonly used apps, quick texts, and even emoticons. But, when I look at my ole beat up Centro and that pastel colored screen...I just can't go back. From what I understand, as a Sprint Premier customer you can upgrade after a year instead of two, so I will deal with the quirks until then and hope that the updates and release of SDK finally release the full potential of this phone.

Frank, it's okay - you don't have to synch email. We'll still let you have a Pre. :-p I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have to synch your email account but still get the contacts, tasks, and calendar. I still haven't been able to get memos working, so I can't speak to that. Media you still get by plugging your phone into a computer via a cable.

Cathi, the Centro came out at a good time for me, because my Treo 650 was dying. I agree that the Centro is a tank and a workhorse. I really didn't have any problems with my Centro, but the Pre makes me even more efficient, and so far, other than the first one that died and had to be replaced, I really haven't had any issues with it. It seems to be as great a workhorse as the Centro. :)

Thanks for the info - I have a Centro but have to wait, because I'm a Verizon customer. This was very useful. I like my Centro so far because it's a tank and a workhorse - no problems as of yet after 1 1/2 years.

I know that this is unusual, but I do NOT want to synch my e-mail onto a handheld device. I have a large Inbox on my computer at home, and I'd like to keep all that information on that computer and not on my handheld. However, I would like to synch the remaining items: Contacts, Tasks, Memos, Media. and Calendar. With the automatic initiation of the synching process as described in your article, do I have the granularity to choose among the items that will synch?
