I recommend trying Identity.net. It allows you to have one primary, verified identity, which you can selectively expose in the form of multiple personas. Also, Identity theft is a huge and growing problem. Identity.net makes is easy (and politically correct) to ask someone to verify their identity prior to continuing the discussion, online or offline. Give it a shot. Feedback welcome.

Here's a weird twist to this topic, Jenny. What happens when you have a virtual identity? I am also well-known, it is in fact part of my job to make myself well-known, as Oberon Octagon, estate manager of ALA Island in Second Life? Not that I fear someone would steal this identity but that I become a very confusing (and yes, confused at times) entity on the Internet.

You make some valid points and it is interesting to think of people actually naming their kids for easier domain name registrations. Crazy as it may seem. We do need to be careful about the info we share and who we share it with as you pointed out. While facebook is a more common place for social networking I find it is more for the teen/tween generation. Its just about parties and pictures. I use personavita.com because as you said it is not really an option anymore not to use a social networking site. At least with personavita I have control of my online identity as well as a really awesome place to create my online brand.
