I don't know about that, but have you seen Rifftrax? (http://www.rifftrax.com/) It's basically MST3K, but you just rent a DVD and buy an MP3 of the jokes. It's even done by some of the MST3K cast!

One of the few useful things I've ever seen in Second Life was a weekly event where people watched short films together and typed their MST3K-style comments. I don't know if they still do it or not, but it worked pretty well.

I don't know of anything, but it sounds fun!

There's a reason I don't go to the movies- I like talking through them too much.

In one of my nerdier moments, some friends and I used to do this for new episodes of Battlestar Galactica. We'd all log into Xbox Live, put our headsets on, jump into a group chat room, then change the channel to Sci-Fi. We quickly learned that our various cable systems are a few seconds out of whack with each other, but overall it worked pretty well :)

You could combine something like

http://www.freeconferencecall.com/

With a VLC unicast :

http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/VideoLAN-HOWTO.html#AEN492

This would require that someone in the group host the file locally (or at least on a computer running VLC) (and therefore probably compressed a bit) and have a decent broadband connection (even then, obviously there's limitations.)

Then have everyone use VoIP to call into the free conference call you set up, and once everyone's on, have everyone connect to the unicast (set to pause) and then when everybody is all good to go, start the movie.

The advantage to a unicast is it's only one source, so everyone is always at the same moment as everyone else in the movie (unlike Chad and his friends dealing with cable delays). And obviously you could just call in with a speakerphone if you'd rather not use VoIP.

A few years back, there was a group of fans of Joe Bob Briggs and his various TV and cable movie shows -- including the TNT Monstervision show -- who would gather in an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) room and all watch the same movie at the same time, whilst making snarky comments. Now *that* was fun!

Also, there's an MST3K group and weekly screenings in Second Life--

If you are an MST3K fan, then you need to get by Squeebee's Mystery Science Theater at Stargazers, slurl below. We have even recreated the Satellite of Love. I created the spheres on either end. We still have yet to get the doors scripted. The theater is inside one of the spheres, and you can enter from the side right now, or go to the other end and walk through the satellite. Squeebee did the scripting for the player in the theater, and you can pick streams from a list. Newcomers can click the screen to update the stream so all are watching at the same place in the stream.

Sounds cool, but I just want a basic ability for a Mac user to download a movie from Netflix. Is that asking too much!@!/
