Two Great Models for Library Blogs

LIS Blogsource continues to catch great links to library blogs. From today's batch:

Sellers Library Teens - " 'As a summer experiment, we have decided to try a group blog by the teens and librarians at Upper Darby Sellers Library. You can blog about anything related to our library: events you attend, great ideas for future events, materials we have, materials you think we should have, or whatever. You can even comment on the posts of others. (Please, no rude comments or inappropriate posts, or they will be removed.) Get your voice heard at the library!' (ATOM feed)"

* This may be the first library blog I've seen that is publicly accessible and has opened comments to the...ahem...public!

"And it seems that the Ohio University Libraries are sold on the blog concept, currently offering four different options:

Reference Blog (ATOM feed)
Business Blog (ATOM feed)
News (ATOM feed)
Systems Status (ATOM feed)"

* That last one is a perfect use of a blog, one that I've argued for at SLS.

Why You Should Start Using RSS

Would a Big Media Company Lose Traffic if They Supported RSS?

"Almost certainly these are the early days of a developing medium. By getting into RSS in 2004, you can get ready for what comes next in 2005. I'd argue that not only is it necessary today to be publishing in RSS, but your organization should also be a user of RSS. Your editorial, advertising people and execs should subscribe not only to your own feeds, but also subscribe to those of your competitors and bloggers. Then in 2005 you'll see with your own eyes what follows and be able to participate. This may be the most important reason to get involved with RSS now." [Really Simple Syndication]

Naturally I think this paragraph applies to libraries.

Will Cox sent me a pointer to this great line from Crooked Timber!

"Madam, a circulating library in a town is as an evergreen tree of diabolical knowledge! It blossoms through the year!—And depend on it, Mrs. Malaprop, that they who are so fond of handling the leaves, will long for the fruit at last."

Of Course, Right Now It's Raining Outside

A refreshing 404 Error Message [via Neat Net Tricks mailing list, which I just realized is now a blog with an accompanying RSS feed!]
